Onboard Data Server (ISO 19847)
E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shippingDefinition
Standardized sensor-data hub.
An onboard data server under ISO 19847:2018 is the shipboard hub that collects field data from machinery, sensors, and systems and shares it safely and efficiently with onboard analytics and shore applications. It standardizes communication protocols and references the ISO 19848:2018 data structure for naming equipment and data channels, so a single server normalizes inputs from different vendors’ controllers. The server is the foundation for shipboard edge computing, engine-health and hull-stress monitoring, and fleet-performance reporting, replacing point-to-point integrations with one standardized data backbone. ISO 19847 was revised in 2024.
