Diploma in Marine Engineering
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Polytechnic engineering pathway in India and Singapore.
A pre-sea polytechnic qualification that prepares cadets for the engine-room watchkeeping route to a marine engineer officer’s certificate of competency. Common in India and Singapore, it is typically a three-year program (in India a Directorate General of Shipping-approved diploma) covering thermodynamics, marine internal-combustion engines, auxiliary machinery, and workshop practice. It feeds into onboard training and the STCW Regulation III/1 engineer-officer-of-the-watch pathway; it is a vocational diploma, not a full bachelor’s degree.
