Definition

STCW certification for the engine-room watchkeeping officer.

The engineer officer of the watch holds the STCW Regulation III/1 Certificate of Competency for the engine-room watch on ships with main propulsion of 750 kW or more. The standard of competence in Code Table A-III/1 spans marine engineering, electrical and electronic systems, maintenance and repair, and controlling ship operation at the operational level. On a periodically unattended machinery space the EOOW responds to the bridge and the engine-room alarms; the watchkeeping principles are set out in STCW Chapter VIII.
