Edward Hopper Seascapes
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Twentieth-century American coastal scenes.
Coastal and marine paintings by Edward Hopper, American realist, 1882 to 1967, who summered on Cape Cod and in Maine and was a competent sailor. His seascapes include ‘Ground Swell’ (1939, Smithsonian American Art Museum), showing a catboat crew watching a buoy on a long swell, and lighthouse studies such as ‘Lighthouse at Two Lights’ (1929). Hopper handled flat morning light and isolation in maritime settings as in his urban scenes.
