F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
American maritime watercolors.
Marine watercolors by John Singer Sargent, American painter, 1856 to 1925, best known for society portraits. From around 1900 he painted hundreds of watercolors on travels, including yachts, fishing boats, and Venetian and Mediterranean shipping handled with rapid wet washes and reserved white paper. In 1909 the Brooklyn Museum bought 83 of his watercolors and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston bought 45 in 1912, fixing his reputation in the medium. ‘White Ships’ (around 1908) is a representative marine sheet.
