Quintet of Seascapes, Boudin

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Series of nineteenth-century French marine paintings.

A grouping of five marine paintings by Eugene Boudin, French painter, 1824 to 1898, the Honfleur-born artist who pioneered open-air beach and sky studies on the Normandy coast and influenced Monet. Boudin produced large numbers of small marine panels of Trouville, Deauville, and the Channel ports; a ‘quintet’ refers to a set of five such seascapes shown or sold together rather than a single named masterwork. The works share his pale skies, low horizons, and quick handling of light.
