Energy Efficiency Design Index, MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 4.
The Energy Efficiency Design Index is the mandatory grams-CO2 per tonne-mile design metric for new ships under MARPOL Annex VI Reg.21 to 24, in force since 1 January 2013. The attained EEDI of each new ship must fall below a required value set by a ship-type reference line and a phase reduction factor: 10 percent in Phase 1, 20 percent in Phase 2, and 30 percent in Phase 3 for most types, with container ships reaching 50 percent at the largest sizes. It rewards hull, propulsion, and machinery efficiency at the design stage and is verified at sea trial.
