Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI)
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Required technical index for existing ships.
The attained EEXI is the design-based CO2 efficiency of an existing ship, computed on the same basis as the EEDI but applied retroactively under MARPOL Annex VI Reg.25 from 1 January 2023. It must be at or below a required value set from the EEDI reference line with a ship-type reduction factor. Many ships meet it by engine power limitation (EPL) or shaft power limitation, which lowers the $P$ term in the index without physical engine change.
