Engine Room Access Control

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

Restricted entry under ISPS access regime.

Engine room access control restricts entry to machinery spaces to authorized personnel, protecting propulsion, steering, and power generation from sabotage or seizure. ISPS Code Part A Section 9.4.2 requires the ship security plan to prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas; Part B paragraph 9.18 lists machinery spaces of category A and the steering gear among spaces a ship may designate restricted. Measures tighten by security level: identification checks at MARSEC level 1, escorted or limited access at level 2, and access suspended or guarded at level 3.
