MARSEC Level 2

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

Heightened security level.

MARSEC Level 2 is the heightened security level at which additional protective measures are maintained for a period because of a raised risk of a security incident. ISPS Code Part A Section 2.1.10 defines security level 2 as the level for which appropriate additional protective measures shall be maintained for a period of time. SOLAS Chapter XI-2 Regulation 3 requires Contracting Governments to set it; the ship security plan must list the level-2 measures, such as tighter access control, more frequent searches, and restricted-area guarding. MARSEC is the US designation under the MTSA.
