Falklands Maritime Heritage

The maritime history of the Falkland Islands, centered on Brunel’s iron steamship SS Great Britain, beached at Sparrow Cove from 1937 after decades as a wool and coal storage hulk. Funded by Jack Hayward’s £150,000, divers refloated her on a pontoon on 7 April 1970; she was towed 8,000 miles back to Bristol’s Great Western Dockyard, arriving 19 July 1970. Stanley harbor also holds historic hulks such as the Jhelum and Lady Elizabeth; the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust documents these wrecks.
