FAME

X1. Cargo Science, Commodities and Cargo Care

Definition

See Biodiesel.

FAME, fatty-acid methyl ester biodiesel, is made by transesterifying vegetable oils or fats with methanol and is the most common biofuel blended into marine fuel, denoted by the Bxx percentage. ISO 8217:2024 added FAME-containing distillate and residual grades to recognize blends up to B100. Its drawbacks against HVO are poorer oxidation stability, water uptake, and susceptibility to microbial growth in tanks, so it needs tighter housekeeping. Certified FAME counts toward FuelEU Maritime at its actual well-to-wake intensity.
