Biofuel
X34. Decarbonization, Alternative Fuels and Carbon PricingDefinition
Liquid or gaseous fuel from biomass; covered by ISCC EU or RED II certification for FuelEU.
Biofuels are liquid or gaseous fuels made from biomass, used in shipping mainly as FAME biodiesel and HVO renewable diesel blended into or replacing conventional fuel oil. Their attraction is drop-in compatibility needing little or no engine change, with well-to-wake CO2 savings of roughly 65 to 90 percent for sustainably certified batches under ISCC or RED II. FuelEU Maritime credits certified biofuels by their actual well-to-wake intensity, and food-or-feed-crop fuels face caps; storage stability and microbial growth are the main operational watch-points.
