X33. Inland Navigation and Barge OperationsDefinition
Hydrotreated vegetable oil, a drop-in renewable diesel used in inland vessel engines.
Hydrotreated vegetable oil is a paraffinic renewable diesel made by hydrotreating vegetable oils, used fats, or animal fats, chemically close to fossil distillate so it drops into existing engines without modification. Unlike FAME biodiesel it has good oxidation stability and cold-flow behavior and no ester-related microbial growth, which suits it to marine use. Well-to-wake CO2 savings of up to about 90 percent apply when the feedstock is certified waste or residue under ISCC, and it counts toward FuelEU compliance at its certified intensity.
