F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

Single-handed Olympic dinghy from 1952 to 2020.

The Finn is the single-handed heavyweight Olympic dinghy designed by Rickard Sarby for the 1952 Helsinki Games, a 4.5-meter cat-rigged hull with an unstayed mast and a single large sail that rewards physical strength and fitness. It was an Olympic class continuously from 1952 to 2020, the longest tenure of any dinghy, sailed by champions including Elvstrom and Ainslie before being dropped from the program after Tokyo. It continues as a strong masters and open class.
