Laser, ILCA Dinghy

F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

Single-handed Bruce Kirby-designed dinghy, Olympic since 1996, now branded ILCA 7.

The ILCA, designed by Bruce Kirby in 1970 and long sold as the Laser, is the world’s most popular adult racing dinghy and the men’s and women’s single-handed Olympic class, raced as the ILCA 7 since the trademark dispute moved the class to the International Laser Class Association name. A 4.2-meter hull takes three interchangeable rigs on a common hull, so a sailor changes only the lower mast and sail to move between the ILCA 4, 6, and 7 sizes.
