VLGC

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Very Large Gas Carrier, ~84,000 m3 LPG.

A VLGC, or very large gas carrier, is the largest standard class of LPG ship, with a cargo capacity around 80,000 to 84,000 cubic meters of fully refrigerated propane and butane. It moves LPG on long-haul export routes, mainly from the US Gulf Coast and the Middle East to Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The cargo is carried at near minus 42 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure in fully refrigerated tanks, with reliquefaction to manage boil-off. Many VLGCs are sized near 230 meters length overall to clear the Neopanamax Panama Canal locks. The next tier up, the VLEC, carries ethane at minus 88 degrees Celsius. The newest VLGCs adopt LPG dual-fuel propulsion.
