Gasoil

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

Marine gasoil (MGO) per ISO 8217 DMA.

Gasoil is a distillate middle fraction of crude oil that, in the marine context, is supplied as marine gas oil to the ISO 8217 DMA grade. It is a clear, low-viscosity distillate burned without heating, unlike residual heavy fuel oil. Marine gasoil has a sulfur content low enough for the 0.10 percent ECA limit and the 0.50 percent global cap under MARPOL Annex VI Reg 14, a cetane response suited to compression ignition, and a flashpoint of at least 60 C for marine use. Ships use it for auxiliary engines, emergency generators, boilers, and main-engine maneuvering or ECA transit.
