Hours of rest

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

Mandated minimum rest hours under MLC and STCW.

The mandatory minimum rest seafarers must receive under the MLC 2006 and STCW: at least 10 hours in any 24-hour period and 77 hours in any 7-day period, with rest split into no more than two periods of which one is at least 6 hours. The rules guard against fatigue-related error on watch. Compliance is logged in the work-and-rest-hours record, a routine target of Port State Control and a frequent finding where commercial pressure squeezes the schedule.
