ISO 14001 (Maritime)

ISO 14001 is the international standard for an environmental management system (EMS), and ISO 14001:2015 is the current third edition. It specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, and continually improving an EMS through the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, built on a documented environmental policy, identification of significant environmental aspects, legal-compliance obligations, objectives, and management review. Shipping companies certify to ISO 14001 to manage emissions, waste, ballast water, and bunker handling across the fleet and shore organization, and certification supports tender qualification and sustainability-linked financing. It is a process standard: it requires a working management system and continual improvement, not a fixed emission threshold.
