Job hazard analysis
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
JHA or JSA, task risk analysis tool.
A job hazard analysis, also called a job safety analysis, is a task-level method that breaks a job into steps, identifies the hazards in each step, and sets controls before work begins. It supports the SMS risk assessment duty under ISM Code section 1.2.2.2 and underpins permit to work for high-risk tasks such as enclosed space entry, hot work, and work aloft. The JHA records the task, the persons involved, hazards, control measures, and required PPE, and is reviewed in the toolbox talk at the worksite. Findings feed the ship risk assessment register and are checked at internal and vetting audits.
