Post-Panamax bulker
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
80,000-110,000 DWT bulker.
A Post-Panamax bulker is a dry-bulk carrier whose beam exceeds the 32.31 meter limit of the original Panama Canal locks, putting deadweight roughly in the 85,000 to 120,000 dwt band between Kamsarmax and Capesize. Before the Neopanamax locks opened in 2016 these ships could not transit the canal at all; the new locks at 49 meters beam, 366 meters length, and 15.2 meters draft now pass most of them. The class fills the gap in coal and iron ore trades where a Capesize is too large for the berth but a Panamax carries too little. Newcastlemax and Chinamax are larger constrained variants above it.
