Lashing manual

A lashing manual, formally the Cargo Securing Manual (CSM), is the ship-specific document that sets out the approved methods and arrangements for stowing and securing cargo other than solid and liquid bulk. SOLAS Chapter VI Regulation 5 and Chapter VII require it on cargo ships, drawn up to the standard of the IMO Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code). It lists the fixed and portable securing devices, their maximum securing load, the locations of lashing points and container fittings, and worked securing schemes for the cargoes carried. Class approves it, and lashing crews and terminal stevedores follow it; departing from it shifts liability for cargo loss to the operator.
