Lipton Cup

F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

International team-racing trophy donated by Sir Thomas Lipton.

A sailing trophy donated by Sir Thomas Lipton (1848 to 1931), the Scottish tea magnate and five-time America’s Cup challenger with his Shamrock yachts. Lipton gave several cups to clubs on both sides of the Atlantic; the best known include the Lipton Cup of the San Diego Yacht Club and Southern California one-design series, sailed since the early 1900s. Because Lipton donated multiple trophies, the host club and class fix which Lipton Cup is meant. Most are contested as one-design or team-racing regattas.
