LNG-fueled bulker
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
LNG-fueled dry bulker.
An LNG-fueled bulker is a dry-bulk carrier whose main and auxiliary engines burn liquefied natural gas, usually through a dual-fuel two-stroke engine that also runs on conventional fuel oil. LNG cuts sulfur oxide and particulate emissions to near zero and lowers carbon dioxide per tonne-mile, which helps a ship’s attained EEXI and CII ratings under IMO efficiency rules. The trade-off is onboard cryogenic tanks at minus 162 degrees Celsius that take cargo space and capital, plus methane slip from the engine that erodes part of the climate benefit. Newcastlemax and Kamsarmax newbuilds lead adoption, refueled through LNG bunkering at a growing list of ports.
