Major US maritime museum.
One of the largest maritime museums in North America, founded in 1930 by Archer Huntington at Newport News, Virginia, set within a 550-acre park. Its centerpiece is the USS Monitor Center, holding the recovered turret, engine, and artifacts of the Union ironclad that fought the CSS Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads on 9 March 1862. The collection also includes the August Crabtree miniature-ship models and a large library and archive.
