Definition

Washington Navy Yard institution.

The official museum of the US Navy, established 1961 at the Washington Navy Yard in Building 76, the former Breech Mechanism Shop of the Naval Gun Factory. It is the only Navy museum covering the entire span of US naval history from the Revolution to the present, holding fighting tops, guns, the bathyscaphe Trieste gondola, and captured ordnance. A relocation to a new building outside the secured Navy Yard was approved to widen public access.
