Definition

Boston museum adjacent to Old Ironsides.

A private museum at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, founded 1972, that interprets the USS Constitution, the frigate launched 21 October 1797 and nicknamed Old Ironsides after British shot bounced off her live-oak hull in the War of 1812. The ship herself, the world’s oldest commissioned warship still afloat, is berthed nearby and crewed by active-duty US Navy sailors; the museum holds artifacts, hands-on exhibits, and the ship’s documented history.
