MARPOL Annex VI (Cruise)

The application of MARPOL Annex VI air-pollution rules to cruise ships: Reg.14 caps fuel sulphur at 0.50 percent globally (since 1 January 2020) and 0.10 percent in Emission Control Areas; Reg.13 sets NOx Tier III for engines built from 2016 operating in NOx ECAs; and Reg.20 to 21 plus the EEDI/EEXI carbon-intensity regime apply to passenger ships above 5,000 GT. Cruise lines comply through low-sulphur fuel, scrubbers (EGCS), LNG, and shore power. CII operational ratings (in force 2023) also bind cruise tonnage.
