MSC Decarbonization Roadmap

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Carrier-specific transition plan.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company’s decarbonization roadmap commits the line to net-zero emissions by 2050, the target shared by Maersk and CMA CGM. The plan combines a large newbuilding program, including dual-fuel LNG vessels, with fleet retrofits and energy-saving technology, alongside trials of methanol, ammonia, and biofuels. MSC reports emissions reductions against the IMO 2008 baseline and frames its transition as dependent on fuel producers and ports scaling supply, not just on vessel orders. The roadmap is a corporate target rather than a regulated commitment, and the 2050 horizon is later and more fuel-flexible than Maersk’s 2040 net-zero goal.
