NEMO Ice Module

D5. Coastal processes, sea-level, cryosphere and ocean observation science

Definition

LIM sea ice component of the NEMO ocean model.

The NEMO ice module is the sea-ice component coupled to the NEMO ocean model, historically the Louvain-la-Neuve LIM model and now its successor SI3, the Sea Ice modeling Integrated Initiative. It is a dynamic-thermodynamic model with an ice-thickness distribution across categories, elastic-viscous-plastic rheology, multilayer thermodynamics with brine and snow, and ridging. SI3 exchanges heat, salt, freshwater, and momentum fluxes with the NEMO ocean below. NEMO with its ice module underpins the Mercator and Copernicus global ocean forecast and the GLORYS reanalysis, and supplies sea-ice concentration, thickness, and drift for polar forecasting.
