NLS Tanker

A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexes

Definition

Ship carrying noxious liquid substances under MARPOL Annex II.

An NLS tanker is a ship constructed or adapted to carry noxious liquid substances in bulk under MARPOL Annex II. Most modern NLS tankers also meet the IBC Code and carry a combined certificate. The Annex II regime determines what residues may be discharged and where, by reference to the X, Y, Z, OS category of each cargo, and requires the Cargo Record Book and an approved Procedures and Arrangements Manual.
