Definition

Crewed round-the-world race formerly known as the Volvo and Whitbread.

The Ocean Race is the crewed round-the-world race held roughly every three to four years, known as the Whitbread Round the World Race from 1973 and the Volvo Ocean Race from 2001 to 2018. It is sailed in legs with stopovers, formerly in one-design Volvo Ocean 65s and now in foiling IMOCA 60s, and is the leading fully crewed offshore event. Crews race through the Southern Ocean past the great capes, the team equivalent of the solo Vendee Globe.
