Spanish-American War cruiser preserved in Philadelphia.
A protected cruiser, launched 1892, preserved at the Independence Seaport Museum on the Delaware River at Philadelphia. She was the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay on 1 May 1898, where his order to the captain, Charles Gridley, opened the engagement that destroyed the Spanish squadron in the Spanish-American War. Olympia is the world’s oldest surviving steel warship still afloat.
