Peer Support Programme
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
ISWAN initiative for seafarer mental health.
A peer support programme trains seafarers to recognize and respond to mental-health distress among shipmates, a response to the isolation, fatigue, and long contracts documented in seafarer wellbeing research. ISWAN and other welfare bodies run such programmes to complement the shore-based helplines and the medical-care provisions of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006. The model places a trained first responder within the crew rather than relying only on external help.
