Performance Sailing
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
General term for racing-oriented sailing.
Performance sailing is sailing focused on speed and racing efficiency rather than cruising comfort, covering one-design dinghy and keelboat racing, offshore handicap racing, and high-speed foiling classes. It centers on getting the most from a boat through sail trim, weight placement, crew choreography, and tuning the rig to the conditions. The discipline ranges from club regattas to Olympic classes and the foiling America’s Cup. Modern performance boats use asymmetric spinnakers, hydrofoils, and carbon rigs to exceed wind speed on a reach.
