Regatta
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Sailing competition consisting of races.
A regatta is a sailing or rowing competition made up of a series of races held over one or more days, scored to find an overall winner. In sailing, a fleet of boats of the same or handicapped classes races a set course around marks; results across the races combine into a single standing under the Racing Rules of Sailing. Regattas range from local club series to Olympic-class championships and major events like Cowes Week. The word is Venetian, from the gondola contests on the city’s canals.
