Definition

Shore-based marine operations role.

The port captain is the shore-based marine operations manager who oversees a ship’s cargo work, mooring, and safe operation while in port, the deck counterpart to the port engineer. The role coordinates stowage, loading sequence, and compliance with port and terminal requirements, and is usually a former master. On some lines the port captain supervises stevedoring and represents the owner’s interests in cargo claims.
