Heritage attractions in the Belem district of Lisbon commemorating Portugal’s Age of Discovery. The Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) was built in 1960 for the 500th anniversary of Henry the Navigator’s death, depicting 33 figures of the discovery era led by Henry. Nearby stand the Belem Tower (1519) and the Jeronimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites from 1983, marking the departure point of Vasco da Gama’s 1497 voyage to India.
