Quartermaster

B3. Nautical Science

Definition

Helmsman on watch.

The quartermaster is a deck rating assigned to the helm during the navigational watch, steering to the officer of the watch’s orders and reporting headings, traffic, and lights. The grade requires able seaman competence in steering and helm orders under STCW. On naval and some passenger ships the title also carries gangway and signaling duties in port. The role is distinct from the officer of the watch, who directs but does not steer.
