Edge Computing (Shipboard)
E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shippingDefinition
On-board compute reducing satcom dependence.
Shipboard edge computing processes sensor and video data on a vessel’s own hardware rather than uplinking raw streams to shore, cutting satellite bandwidth, cost, and latency for time-critical functions. An edge gateway aggregates data from an ISO 19847:2018 data server, runs analytics for engine health, hull stress, and CCTV locally, and sends only events, summaries, or model outputs over the satcom link. This suits intermittent or expensive connectivity at sea and keeps control-loop and safety functions running when the link drops, a design point the IEC 62443 OT-security model also favors by limiting exposed traffic.
