IoT (Internet of Things) Maritime

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Networked ship-side and shore-side sensors.

Maritime IoT is the network of connected sensors and devices spanning ship and shore: engine and cargo monitoring, reefer telematics, hull-stress and trim sensors, terminal automation, and port-asset tracking, all feeding analytics over satellite, cellular, or local links. Onboard, the ISO 19847:2018 data server and ISO 19848:2018 data dictionary standardize how machinery data is collected and named, while OPC UA (IEC 62541) handles interoperability. Maritime IoT differs from generic IoT in its intermittent connectivity, which pushes processing to shipboard edge computing, and in its OT-cyber exposure under IACS UR E26/E27.
