Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road.

Road CMR refers to carriage under the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR), signed in Geneva in 1956 and applying where the place of taking over and the place of delivery are in two different states, at least one a contracting party. Around 58 states are parties. The CMR consignment note evidences the contract and the carrier’s receipt; it is not a document of title. The Convention sets carrier liability for loss, damage, and delay, capping compensation at 8.33 SDR per kilogram of gross weight short, and gives a one-year limitation period, extended to three for wilful misconduct.
