SHADE (Shared Awareness and Deconfliction)
E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and riskDefinition
Multinational naval coordination forum.
Shared Awareness and Deconfliction (SHADE), the multinational forum first convened in Bahrain in December 2008 to coordinate the navies operating against Somali piracy. SHADE let EUNAVFOR Atalanta, NATO’s Operation Ocean Shield, CTF-151, and independent deployers such as China, India, and Russia synchronize patrols, deconflict the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor schedule, and share tactics without a unified command. It is voluntary coordination, not a coalition; the model was later copied as SHADE Gulf of Guinea for West African waters.
