Ship Security Alert System (SSAS)

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required under SOLAS XI-2/6.

The Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) is the covert alarm that lets a ship under attack transmit a security alert to its flag administration and designated authorities without alerting any other ship or sounding any onboard signal. SOLAS XI-2/6 requires it on passenger ships, cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and above, and mobile offshore drilling units, on a phased fitting schedule that began with the first radio survey after 1 July 2004. The alert identifies the ship and its position and signals a security threat, routed to the Company Security Officer and the flag state, not broadcast. It supports the ISPS Code security regime.
