SSCV (Semi-Submersible Crane Vessel)

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

Heavy-lift offshore crane vessel.

A semi-submersible crane vessel (SSCV) is a twin-pontoon column-stabilized platform with one or more very high-capacity revolving cranes, used for the heaviest offshore lifts: jackets, integrated decks, and decommissioned topsides. The semi-submersible hull gives low heave response for crane work in open seas. Heerema’s Thialf lifts about 14,200 tonnes in tandem; Sleipnir, delivered 2019, lifts about 20,000 tonnes with two 10,000-tonne cranes. SSCVs hold station by spread mooring or DP3, and overlap with derrick barges at the high end of offshore lift capacity.
