Tuna Fishery
D4. Fisheries, aquaculture, blue economy and marine resourcesDefinition
Large pelagic fishery, mostly managed under tuna RFMOs.
Tuna fisheries land highly migratory species (skipjack, yellowfin, bigeye, albacore, and bluefin) that cross national zones and the high seas, so they are managed almost entirely through the five tuna RFMOs rather than by single states. Skipjack supports the bulk of canned-tuna volume and is generally healthy, while bigeye and Atlantic and Pacific bluefin have needed rebuilding. Gear ranges from purse seine sets on FADs and free schools to pole-and-line and longline.
