United States Coast Guard Academy

The federal service academy of the US Coast Guard at New London, Connecticut, founded in 1876 aboard the schooner Dobbin as the Revenue Cutter School of Instruction. It commissions graduates as Coast Guard ensigns and awards a Bachelor of Science, training cadets aboard the barque Eagle. Admission is by merit rather than congressional nomination, distinguishing it from the other US service academies, and it produces officers for law enforcement, search and rescue, and marine safety duties.
