University of Rhode Island Maritime Archaeology
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Graduate program in maritime history.
Graduate teaching and research in maritime archaeology and ocean exploration at the University of Rhode Island, centered on its Graduate School of Oceanography. Robert Ballard, who located the wrecks of RMS Titanic (1985) and the German battleship Bismarck (1989), holds a professorship there and runs the Ocean Exploration Trust and its ship E/V Nautilus. The program emphasizes deep-water survey with ROVs and telepresence, complementing the ship-construction focus of the Texas A&M nautical archaeology program.
