VLSFO
X61. Marine Lubricants and Cylinder OilsDefinition
Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil with sulfur content at or below 0.5 percent mass, used to meet IMO 2020 outside emission control areas.
Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil is residual or blended marine fuel with sulphur at or below 0.50 percent by mass, the workhorse fuel for meeting the global cap that took effect on 1 January 2020. VLSFO grades vary widely in viscosity, density, and stability because refiners blend them from different streams, which raised concerns over compatibility, cold-flow, and cat-fines after 2020. It is specified under ISO 8217 and recorded on the bunker delivery note. Inside ECAs the 0.10 percent ULSFO or marine gas oil replaces it.
